Colonial Williamsburg, Fife and Drum March - Fantastic!
My wife and I spent Saturday in Colonial Williamsburg and did not even scratch the surface of what is there to be seen. We enjoyed touring the Govenor's Palace and marveled at the array of swords and muskets dispalyed on the walls. The price of admission was a bit high but we chose the year pass, so there are ways to see the sites for less. The more exciting part of the tour was in the evening when, after returning from a quick side trip to the Williamsburg Pottery Factory outlet, we watched a re-enactment of the colonial soliders (in red coats, the King's Army?) march down Duke of Glouchester street and to the Palace Green lawn area. The drums and fifes were very rousing and the marching soliders accompanied by torch bearers REALLY transported you back to a time and place long ago! It was very cool. I could not help but think of our modern soliders, many near the same age as these actors, going of to battle in Iraq or Afghanistan. Furthermore, picturing the actual soldiers of colonial times being as young as the actors recreating the parts this evening was very moving! It was a little cold out this evening and their faces glowed in the torch light, but it was not difficult to imagine what the additional burden of going to war would mean to them. The passes we purchased included many options within the Colonial area, but of everything we did this day the marching soldiers was the best. - Dennis , posted 11/26/06
